Sukma: Sarawak through to tennis semis

KUCHING (Aug 18): Sarawak has moved a step closer to winning a Malaysia Games (Sukma) medal in the tennis mixed team event after successfully qualifying for the semifinal stage.

They defeated Penang 3-2 in the quarter finals played yesterday at the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association Centre here . Facing them at the semifinals today is the Federal Territories, which received a bye.

Sarawak secured the first point against Penang through the women’s doubles after the pair of Soo Hui Yii and Eliora Hii defeated opponents Alyssa Wong and Sharon Kok 6-2, 6-0.

This was followed by the second point through Nathanielle Ann Lee who beat Kan Yi Liz 6-2, 6-1 in the women’s singles.

Sarawak’s passage to the semis was secured after Matthew Goh defeated Muhammad Adeeb Azhari 6-0, 6-3 in the men’s singles.

The win was a welcomed relief for Sarawak after they had earlier lost to favourites Selangor 2-3 in last Group C encounter in the morning.

It was achieved not long after Sukma Sarawak assistant chef-de-mission for tennis Dato Henry Harry Jinep came to SLTA Centre to give motivational support for the team.

Selangor, which also received a bye, will play Perak in the other semifinal stage.

Perak had defeated Negeri Sembilan 3-2 in the quarter finals.
