SRI AMAN (Feb 5): The first day of the Sarawak Games (Suksar) IV 2026 got off to a smooth start today, with 10 sports kicking off their competitions as scheduled at venues in Sri Aman, Betong and Lubok Antu, said Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) acting chief executive officer Khairul Nizam Morshidi.

He said favourable weather conditions in Sri Aman and Betong ensured that all events, especially outdoor competitions, proceeded without disruption.

“The main concern was the weather, but thankfully the conditions in Sri Aman and Betong were good, especially with three outdoor events taking place.

“With this kind of weather, God willing, everything will continue to run smoothly, including indoor events,” he said when met at the Petanque Arena, Sri Aman Sports Complex.

Among the sports that began competitions were boxing, table tennis, petanque and softball, as well as karate and sepak takraw in Lubok Antu.

Netball, cycling, weightlifting and taekwondo, all offering medal events, also got underway in Betong.

Khairul Nizam, who is also acting director of the Sarawak Sports Council, expressed satisfaction with the overall organisation so far, noting that there were no issues regarding athletes’ accommodation or meals.

On preparations for the closing ceremony scheduled for February 8, he said arrangements would begin after the conclusion of the boxing event at the Indoor Stadium, Sri Aman Sports Complex.

“God willing, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will be present at the closing ceremony. Preparations will be carried out at the same venue, the Sri Aman Indoor Stadium. We will start after boxing ends.

“This afternoon, we will have a meeting with the Resident’s Office to ensure everything runs smoothly before commencing the work,” he said.

Earlier, Khairul Nizam also visited several competition venues, including the softball field at the Sri Aman Sports Complex, the table tennis venue at Dewan Suarah Sri Aman, and other locations.
