SUPP Bawang Assan urged to stay united

SIBU: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan chairman Councillor Kevin Lau Kor Jie has called on party members to remain united and strengthen teamwork as the state election draws closer.

He said the branch would face greater challenges in the period ahead, making it essential for members to pool their strengths, work closely together and remain focused on serving the people and advancing development in Bawang Assan.

“From the past until now, everyone has been working hard in the hope of bringing better development to Bawang Assan. We must continue to harness the strength of our team to strive for better living and development opportunities for the people,” he said .

He said this at the Mid-Autumn Festival celebration dinner organised by the SUPP Bawang Assan Branch Women’s Wing held at SUPP Sibu headquarters on Sunday evening (Sept 27).

Lau, who is also SUPP youth chief, commended the women’s wing for its continued contributions to the party and wider community.

He said its role extended beyond party programmes, with many of its leaders and members actively involved in community affairs and initiatives benefiting local residents.

“Many of our party members and leaders are occupied with their respective work, community services and party affairs. Therefore, this celebration provides an opportunity for everyone to put aside their busy schedules for a while, come together, exchange views and strengthen our bonds,” he said.

Lau said seemingly simple activities such as the Mid-Autumn gathering required considerable effort from the women’s wing, but such efforts helped build stronger ties and fostered the unity needed for the branch to move forward.

Turning to local development, he said the progress of Bawang Assan was closely connected to the well-being of its people.

He called on all members to continue working hand in hand and contributing to the development of the community, while maintaining close cooperation with other branches to strengthen service efforts.

“Good weather depends on nature, while peace and prosperity depend on people,” he said, stressing that social development depended not only on circumstances but also on human effort, responsibility and stewardship.

He said those involved in politics and public service had a particular responsibility to contribute towards creating a conducive environment for society to progress.

Meanwhile, SUPP Bawang Assan Branch Women’s Wing chief Katherine Wong said the Mid-Autumn Festival, traditionally associated with reunion and harmony, had grown beyond the boundaries of a single ethnic celebration in Sarawak’s multiracial society.

She said the celebration brought together members from different ethnic backgrounds, including Iban members, who joined the festivities by enjoying mooncakes and carrying lanterns.

“This is the most genuine spirit of Sarawak,” she said.

Wong said the participation of people from different ethnic communities reflected Sarawak’s multicultural character and the spirit of harmony and togetherness that continued to bind its communities.
