SIBU (Feb 19): The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Dudong branch is targeting 3,000 members by the end of this year, said its chairman Wong Ching Yong.

Wong said the target is based on the encouraging public response to SUPP Dudong’s Chinese New Year open house, held for the first time at the branch’s new office on Jalan Aman here.

“We’ve just moved to our new office. Our previous office was constructed about 17 years ago but had flooding problems, so we had to relocate.

“The new office gives new hope, new victory. That is our hope,” he told reporters on Thursday.

Wong said the response to the new premises has been positive, noting that membership enrolment has also increased.

“Currently we have 2,200 members in the Dudong branch, and we hope to hit 3,000 by the end of this year,” he said.

He explained that some members had been transferred to the newly formed SUPP Sibu Jaya branch, but that when combined, the total membership of both Dudong and Sibu Jaya branches was close to 3,000.

“Sibu Jaya and Dudong are ‘twins’. A lot of our activities are joint activities,” he added.

On manpower, Wong said the Dudong branch operates with one full-time staff member, while Sibu Jaya has a part-time staff.

He also took the opportunity to extend festive greetings to supporters and the public, wishing them good health and good luck in the year ahead.

More than 600 people comprising branch members, supporters and residents attended the open house.

Also present were Sibu Rural District Council chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai, the Political Secretary to the Premier William Anut, and Councillor Yiing Sy Huat.
