KUCHING (July 8): Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) is helping students who obtained 10As and above in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations to secure a place at local universities.

SUPP Public Complaint Bureau (PBC) chief Milton Foo said some SPM top scorers and their parents had been requesting the party to help them appeal to the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE).

“Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has promised that students, irrespective of race and faith, who scored 10As and above in SPM will be granted entry into matriculation and foundation programmes at local universities.

“Despite having pledged so, there are still SPM top scorers whose application into local universities were denied. Students and parents have been approaching us with regard to this matter,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Foo said the SUPP PBC had brought up this matter to Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also SUPP president.

He said the party president had instructed him to take up the challenge of assisting these students.

“Dr Sim Kui Hian wants us to go all-out to help these SPM top scorers, and that he will chip in including voicing up to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, should need arise,” he said.

Foo pointed out that it is pertinent for top leaders and political figures in the country to keep their promises rather than providing lip services.

He said political leaders should uphold integrity and fulfil promises made to the people since they were elected by the people.

He also called upon SPM top scorers, whose application into local universities had been denied, to contact him via 012-8868682.

“We are in the midst of gathering their details, which will be compiled and submitted to the MoHE on July 15 for further action,” he added.
