SIBU (Feb 13): The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Pelawan Branch is set to host its Chinese New Year open house, with 1,500 visitors expected to attend this Feb 18 at Uni-City, Jalan Wawasan here.

State Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Michael Tiang, who is also the Pelawan assemblyman, said the programme will run from 11am to 1pm and aims to bring together residents from across Sibu in the spirit of unity and celebration.

“This year, I am hosting an open house specially for Pelawan. I welcome all our Sibu friends to join and visit us, and enjoy the warmth of Chinese New Year,” he said.

Tiang noted that the timing is timely as it falls a day before the start of fasting month for Muslims.

“It is a perfect moment to gather and celebrate Chinese New Year. In Sarawak, we celebrate festivals like Gawai Dayak, Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Chinese New Year as one community.

“That is the true picture of Sarawak harmony and unity,” he added.

The event will feature a variety of food stalls offering both halal and non-halal options to cater to guests of all backgrounds.

Tiang said the previous open houses have drawn crowds of up to 2,000 or 3,000 attendees.
Earlier today, Tiang visited hawkers and shop operators at the Sungai Merah commercial area to extend festive greetings ahead of the celebrations.

He also distributed ang pow (red packets) to members of the public as a sign of sharing blessings and goodwill.
