SIBU (March 13): Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak (TBS) collected more than RM155 million in zakat contributions last year, reflecting continued public support for the organisation’s welfare initiatives.
TBS general manager Datu Abang Mohd Shibli Abang Mohd Nailie said the total assistance distributed by the organisation exceeded the amount collected, as surplus funds from previous years were also utilised.
“This is because throughout our organisation’s journey, we have received strong support and cooperation from various parties, especially the media, who have given us very good cooperation.
“Likewise, the asnaf, other government departments, agencies, and our strategic partners have played an important role in helping us deliver aid effectively to communities in need,” he told reporters at the Majlis Iftar Perdana held in conjunction with Program Kasih Ramadan here on Thursday.
During the event, Abang Mohd Shibli presented financial assistance totalling RM53,400 to 213 recipients.
He pointed out TBS had channelled RM279,095 in aid to 1,010 asnaf in Sibu Division.
“This assistance reflects our concern and commitment to helping those in need, particularly in preparation for Ramadan and Hari Raya Aidilfitri,” he said.
Abang Mohd Shibli also shared about the development of TBS’ building in Sri Aman, which is being built using the organisation’s own funds.
He said the building would not only generate benefits through rental but would also house several government agencies to make it easier for the public to access services in one location.
“Among the agencies that will be housed in the building are the Welfare Department, Resident’s Office, District Office, and several other departments that provide services to the local community,” he said.
He added that a Sarawak government service counter would also be available to enable the public to handle various government-related matters at the centre.
At the event, Abang Mohd Shibli also officiated at the Projek Infak Baju Raya Al Bait, organised by Yayasan Kepimpinan Al Bait (YKAB), a special initiative aimed at providing new festive clothing to those in need, particularly asnaf families in Sibu.
