MIRI, 1 Oct: The Libat Urus session between the Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government along with Curtin University Malaysia gave students exposure to real development issues involving housing, infrastructure, leaks and environmental management.

The programme, which brings together government representatives, academia and students, also helps students understand how their fields of study can contribute to solving issues at the local level.

According to a student from Civil and Construction Engineering, Stephen Juna Puspa, 20, the session gave him a clearer picture of aspects of construction and flow, including issues occurring in Miri.

He said the knowledge could be used when he enters engineering.

"This session has helped me a lot to understand things related to housing, construction and flow. I can also find out some of the problems going on in Miri.

"I hope to use the knowledge I've gained here when I become an engineer", he said when he met TVS here, today.

Meanwhile, a student from the School of Applied Geology, Darrell Eleazer Jerow, 20, said discussions about geological conditions in Canada Hill, affordable housing and infrastructure give perspective on the relationship of geological factors to development.

"From this round table session, I hope that the issues of coastal housing, flood risk and landslides will also be addressed in the next session", he said.

For Chemical Engineering student Germain Nanggai Jampi, 20, the session helped him understand the role of local government in providing housing and creating a better living environment for the community.

"I hope that the upcoming session will give more exposure on what is being done in housing and how we as future engineers can contribute to Sarawak's development", he said.

The session also highlighted the importance of cooperation between government, academia and future professionals in building a safe, sustainable and resilient community. - TVS
