KUCHING, Sept. 19: The release of seeds from seaweed in Free Muara is among efforts to support the sustainability of fisheries resources, as well as raise community awareness about the importance of conserving aquatic ecosystems.
The seeds release was finalized by the Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Sarawak embracing ADUN Sea Temperature, Datuk Dr. Hazland Brother Haji Hipni, for the closing ceremony of the Free Muara Village Fishing Competition hosted by KRT at Jeti Muara Free, here.
In the meantime, Dr. Hazland said the launch of the inaugural fishing tournament held at Muara Tebas has the potential to attract more visitors to the area.
"The promotion of competitions like this has the potential to attract more visitors, boost economic activity and benefit and increase income for locals", he said.
He also appreciated and thanked the Sarawak Department of Marine Fisheries (JPLS) for their support and assistance in the implementation of the programme.
The release of seeds also reflects JPLS's cooperation with the fishing community and local people in enriching fisheries resources and maintaining the sustainability of aquatic ecosystems.
The programme also provides an opportunity for communities to raise awareness of the importance of conserving fisheries resources which are among the vital assets to the livelihoods and socio-economic status of local people.
The council also witnessed the presentation of prizes to the winners of fishing competitions in recognition of their participation and spirit of sport.
The meeting was attended by JPLS Senior Director, Abdul Rahman Abdul Wahab; Chief of Muara Tebas Kampung, Sudin Rasit; Union Officer, Department of National Unity and National Integration, Hamdi Omar; Chairman KRT Muara Tebas; Chief of Selabat Kampung as well as officials and staff of JPLS.
