SIBU (Feb 9): Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang distributed over 700 ‘angpows’ (red packets) to hawkers and diners at Taman Selera Muhibbah here on Sunday night ahead of the Lunar New Year.
He told reporters that the initiative meant to share the joy and blessings of the festive season, especially with the arrival of the Year of the Horse.
“We want to keep it casual—no protocol, no formalities, just meeting people on the ground, sharing light moments, and exchanging thoughts about Sibu’s future,” he said.
The Pelawan assemblyman noted the distribution went beyond the usual practice of giving angpows only to children.
“This time, we gave to the whole family; people from all walks of life. Seeing families come together and dine together—this is the perfect picture of our Sarawak community and spirit,” he said.
