MIRI (Aug 15): Sarawak’s Malaysian Games (Sukma) 2024 fencing squad is targeting at least two gold medals for the event which begins here on Monday (Aug 19).
Team manager Mohd Azmi Zakaria is optimistic the target is within Sarawak’s grasp as it is based on the training and performance of fencers in past competitions.
“We would like to award more medals as many as possible but our initial target is two gold medals contested in the foil and epee events,” he said when contacted today.
To motivate and inspire athletes, the Sarawak Fencing Association is offering an incentive for gold medallists.
“We have promised the athletes who are able to present a gold medal in the match will be given a reward of RM300 from the association,” Mohd Azmi said.
“We have prepared by participating in many competitions to prepare the athletes mentally and physically and we hope they contribute something to the team.”
Fencing will be held on Aug 19-23 at Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club here.
There are 12 gold medals at stake and those wishing to watch and support Sarawak’s athletes can attend for free.
