KUCHING (Sept 4): Over 50 participants took part in a traditional food workshop and competition recently, held at Borneo Highland as part of the ‘Merdeka Glamping’ celebration.

The event, hosted by Kelab Belia Proaktif and supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, meant to highlight the cultural richness and culinary traditions of Sarawak.

Among the traditional local dishes showcased were ‘manok pansuh’ (chicken in bamboo) and ‘lemang’ (glutinous rice in bamboo).

In his opening speech, Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang commended the participants’ dishes, demonstrating their cooking skills and dedication in upholding culinary traditions, as well as the organisers for hosting a meaningful celebration.

“Such events are essential in preserving our cultural heritage, and our traditions must be passed down to the younger generation.

“I am impressed by the dedication and level of skill displayed by the participants, and I applaud Kelab Belia Proaktif for their efforts in organising the event,” said Lo.

Meanwhile, Kelab Belia Proaktif president Shenton Tan said the event was a celebration of Sarawak heritage as it was organised in connection with ‘Merdeka Glamping’ by Borneo Glamping, meant to inspire youths to engage with more outdoor activities.

For the competition, the panel of judges comprised members of the Borneo Highlands Residents Club and Kelab Belia Proaktif, to evaluate the dishes according to authenticity, taste, and presentation.
