KUCHING, Feb 16: A pilot water supply project has provided 315 households in Kampung Sungai Mata with a reliable source of treated water through two newly installed storage tanks, delivering a total of 38,000 litres per day.

Sarawak Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi said the system, now fully operational, is intended as a long-term solution and could serve as a model for other rural settlements requiring decentralised water storage.

“Each tank has a capacity of 19,000 litres, bringing the total to 38,000 litres per day dedicated to 315 houses here.

“Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd has been instructed to monitor the system to ensure consistent delivery and prevent further complaints,” he told reporters during a working visit to the village today.

An audio recording of the minister’s speech was later shared with DayakDaily.

He added that Samarahan Division is not facing a water shortage, with treated water supplied from the Batu Kitang Water Treatment Plant, which is undergoing upgrades to increase output from 868 million litres to 968 million litres per day.

“Supply to the division has already been increased from 23 million litres to 47 million litres per day through pipelines serving surrounding areas,” he said.

The minister also noted that the State government has identified a new raw water source in Sebuyau for a future treatment plant and has begun constructing a 20-million-litre-per-day plant in Lundu as part of broader efforts to interconnect water supply networks across Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Sri Aman and Betong divisions. — DayakDaily
