KUCHING (Jan 19): Two decades after his passing, the legacy of KTS Group founding managing director Dato Sri Dr Lau Hui Kang continues to inspire, with his contributions to business, the Chinese community and Sarawak still fondly remembered.
Speaking at a commemorative ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of Lau’s passing, Bawang Assan assemblyman Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh described him as an extraordinary leader whose influence has only grown with time.
“Twenty years have passed since Lau left us. Yet time has not diminished his legacy,” Wong said.
“His spirit, character and contributions have become even more deeply appreciated.”
Wong highlighted Lau’s entrepreneurial journey, noting that his success was grounded in perseverance, integrity and social responsibility.
“He firmly believed that true business success must rest on trust, responsibility and long-term commitment,” he said.
After establishing himself in the timber industry, Lau promoted economic diversification into plantations, agriculture, food manufacturing, and downstream wood-based processing.
“To Lau, business was not merely a means of profit, but a platform to serve society and improve lives,” Wong added.
Beyond business, Lau was a dedicated community leader who valued education, cultural heritage, and unity.
“Through his actions, he demonstrated the true meaning of leadership—not a symbol of status, but a responsibility to serve,” Wong said.
As president of the Sarawak Timber Association for 16 years, Wong said Lau advanced industry growth while emphasising sustainability and ethical practices.
“He consistently reminded the industry that progress must balance environmental protection, social responsibility, and the interests of future generations,” Wong said.
Wong also paid tribute to Lau’s philanthropy, describing his charitable work as quiet yet enduring.
“What he left behind was not only material success, but a powerful legacy of virtue, compassion, and moral leadership,” he said.
In commemorating Lau, Wong said the ceremony was not merely to remember him, but to carry forward his spirit and values, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire future generations.
