Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas
KUCHING (March 20): Hari Raya Aidilfitri is more than a religious celebration, as it also serves as a time for Sarawakians to reflect on their role in safeguarding the state’s rights as a founding partner of Malaysia.
According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the arrival of Syawal embodies values of unity, forgiveness and togetherness, which continue to strengthen ties among the state’s diverse communities.
He said Sarawak’s multiracial and multi-religious society remains a key pillar of its harmony, reflecting the spirit of ‘segulai sejalai’ in building a shared future.
“In Sarawak, this spirit of togetherness reflects the unique strength of our society, where people of various races and religions visit one another, share festive dishes and celebrate the occasion as one large family.
“This celebration is not only a time for joy and forgiveness, but also a moment for reflection on who we are, where we come from and what we must defend,” he said in a special address in conjunction with the 2026 Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.
Uggah also emphasised that Sarawak’s status as a founding partner of Malaysia is clearly provided for under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), which safeguards its autonomy and rights.
He called on Sarawakians to remain united in supporting efforts to uphold these rights, noting that the state’s strength lies in the unity of its people.
“This is not a right granted by anyone, but rather part of the very foundation of the formation of Malaysia itself.
“The steps taken are not merely administrative matters, but are for the sake of justice and to ensure that what rightfully belongs to Sarawak is returned, while safeguarding the future of coming generations.
“When we stand united, our voice becomes stronger and clearer. Therefore, during this blessed festive season, let us strengthen our unity and stand firmly with the state leadership,” he added.
