BAU, 12 Sept: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) should not only be recognized for academic excellence, but also ensure that the knowledge and expertise it possesses can be felt and directly benefit society.

Vice Chancellor of the Malaysian University Sarawak (UNIMAS), Prof. I'm going to see Dr. Ahmad Hata Rasit, said the approach is important to ensure that universities play a greater role in addressing society's needs and challenges.

"We don't want universities to be known for academic excellence. We want the university to feel its presence in society.

"UNIMAS and the Consortium of Universiti Awam Hospital Malaysia (KHUAM) have medical expertise, academic and professional strengths, technology as well as a young generation full of potential. All of this must be moved for the benefit of society", he said.

He said this while addressing the KHUAM Program of KPT Prihatin Madani at Serbaguna Hall Kampung Bijuray Mogag, here today.

According to him, the program carries a clear message that health aspects are not just about treating when someone gets sick, but require an early, proactive and community-based approach.

He said the approach was particularly important in Sarawak, taking into account the state's geographical breadth as well as the diversity of communities that required a closer, flexible and responsive approach.

"Let's not just wait for society to come to us. We have to go to them too. Go to communities in need, listen to their voices, understand the challenges they face and come with knowledge, expertise and dedication to serve", he said.

He said the value of a university is ultimately not only measured by what happens on campus, but through changes that can be brought to communities outside campus.

Commenting on the concept of Community-Driven University for a Sustainable World, he said UNIMAS not only wants to generate knowledge but also bring science to life, mobilize expertise and together build the future of society.

He said that every effort on the ground has the potential to have more impact than just helping a patient, it can even help a family, strengthen a community and change someone's future.

"Because every time we go out on the field, maybe we're not just helping a patient. Maybe we're helping a family.

"Maybe we're strengthening a community. And maybe, without realizing it, we're changing someone's future", he said.

The KHUAM KPT Prihatin Madani programme also involves the collaboration of UNIMAS Teachers Hospital and Universiti Awam Malaysia Hospital Consortium, along with community leaders and stakeholders.

The programme is part of efforts to strengthen the links between higher education institutions and communities, especially in providing services and expertise that can contribute to health, well-being and community development in Sarawak.
