SIBU (Aug 16): University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) here has been named as the nation’s best university in Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) education by the Malaysia Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE).

UTS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Khairuddin Ab Hamid received the award from MoHE deputy minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud at a ceremony in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

UTS chairman Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee Dr Annuar described the recognition as a remarkable milestone for such a young university.

“This award adds another feather on UTS’s cap and is proof that we are able to compete with universities which are older or more advanced than us in Malaysia.

“It will definitely improve UTS’s ranking and boost its reputation. In fact, we are on track to achieve a student population target of 4,000 this year,” said Dr Annuar, who is Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development and Nangka assemblyman.

Through the state government’s initiative, he said 50 per cent of the tuition fees are funded under the UTS Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes.

“In 2026, students will be able to study free at UTS – thanks to our Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg,” he said, while commending all UTS staff members for their hard work.
