Woman dies in Sarikei room fire

SARIKEI (Jan 19): A 31-year-old woman died after a fire broke out in the rented room she was occupying on the fourth floor of a premises along Jalan Repuk here on Sunday.

According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operations centre, the victim, identified as Priscilla Ida Francis, was found unconscious in the bathroom of the room by firefighters during the rescue operation.

Medical personnel at the scene later confirmed that she had died.

The Sarikei fire station received a distress call regarding the incident at 4.51pm and firefighters were dispatched to the scene.

“Firefighters discovered that the fire had affected a room measuring approximately 20 by 15 feet, with about 60 per cent of the area damaged. The unit was being used as a rental room,” Bomba said.

The victim’s body was handed over to the police at around 7pm for further action.
