KUCHING, 20 September: The efforts to clean up the environment through World Cleanup Day observance of North Kuching City Council (DBKU) 2026 are seen as having a major impact on environmental sustainability.

Sarawak Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said that although the clean-up activities carried out appear small, the impact on the environment is large, especially in helping to reduce the effects of global warming.

"It was a very good effort, it may seem small, but the effect is very, very great.

"The impact on the environment is enormous as this will be able to reduce both the effects of global warming and also the environmental impact", he said while addressing the closing ceremony of DBKU World Cleanup Day 2026 at Jaya Pact Park, Demak Sea on Sunday.

In addition, the initiative is not just being implemented in one location but is part of a clean-up movement involving multiple areas across Malaysia and around the world.

"That's why we have a successful program like this, not only in Jaya Pact Park, Demak sea, or DBKU, but all over the world because that's why it is called World Cleanup Day", he said.

He said that such a community-based approach to engagement is appropriate to continue as collective action can contribute to environmental conservation efforts for future generations.

World Cleanup Day also reflects the efforts of local authorities to encourage communities to take joint responsibility for environmental cleanliness, in line with the environmental sustainability agenda.-TVS
