KUCHING, April 23: Police have busted a drug trafficking syndicate involving 1,281 vape cartridge packets suspected to contain cannabis liquid, with seized drugs valued at RM576,450, following the arrest of two local men in an operation along Jalan Setia Raja here on April 19.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said the operation was carried out by the Sarawak Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) with intelligence support from the Malaysia Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS).

“The two suspects, aged 28 and 38, are believed to be part of a drug distribution network operating across Sarawak.

“A total of 1,281 vape cartridges were discovered during the raid, with a combined estimated weight of 3,202.50 grammes,” he said in a statement following a press conference at the Sarawak Police Contingent headquarters today.

Mohamad Zainal revealed that investigations found that both suspects served as runners and transporters for the syndicate, receiving RM8,000 for each drug delivery.

The syndicate is believed to have been active since November 2025.

“The syndicate’s modus operandi involved sourcing drugs from Peninsular Malaysia, storing and repackaging them at homestay premises, before transporting them into Sarawak via courier services. The drugs were later collected locally for distribution,” he said.

Both suspects had no prior criminal records, and initial urine screening tests were negative for drugs.

Authorities also seized a vehicle worth RM12,000 under the Dangerous Drugs (Forfeiture of Property) Act 1988.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment and whipping upon conviction. Both suspects are currently remanded as investigations continue. — DayakDaily
