Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) personnel carry out rescue operations at the scene of a crash involving a Perodua Aruz along Jalan Sibu-Bintulu near Rumah Seri Kenangan, Sibu, working to extricate a trapped victim using hydraulic equipment after stabilising the vehicle.

SIBU, May 10: A 66-year-old woman was killed while three others were injured in a road crash involving two cars at Batu 11, Jalan Sibu-Bintulu near Rumah Seri Kenangan here last night (May 9).

According to a report by Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), the distress call was received at 9.49pm, with firefighters from the Sungai Merah Fire and Rescue Station rushing to the scene.

Upon arrival, rescuers found that the accident involved a four-wheel-drive Mazda BT-50 and a Perodua Aruz, both carrying four occupants each.

“One female victim was found unconscious and trapped in the front passenger seat of the Perodua Aruz, which was in a side rollover position.

“Firefighters then stabilised the vehicle using chocks before using hydraulic spreaders to create access and extricate the trapped victim,” the Bomba said.

The victim was later confirmed dead at the scene by Health Ministry personnel and handed over to the police for further action.

Two other female passengers in the Perodua Aruz sustained minor shoulder injuries and were sent to hospital by ambulance. The male driver of the vehicle was unhurt.

All four occupants of the Mazda BT-50, including the driver, also escaped without injuries.

A total of eight firefighters were deployed to the operation, supported by one Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) and one Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) unit.

Firefighters also carried out road cleaning works before returning to their station. — DayakDaily
