KUCHING, May 22: Two separate violent assault cases reported in the Jalan BDC and Jalan Tabuan Hilir on Thursday (May 21) led to the arrest of 11 local men.
Kuching District Police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said that in the first incident, which occurred at about 1.30am along Jalan BDC, the victim sustained injuries after being attacked by a group of unknown individuals armed with sticks and a baton while on the way home.
“Police acted on information and detained seven local men aged between 21 and 33. One baton was also seized in the operation. Checks revealed that one suspect had a prior criminal record, while urine screening tests for all seven men returned negative results,” he said in a statement today.
In a separate incident at about 7.28am on the same day along Jalan Tabuan Hilir, a victim was assaulted by a group of men, also resulting in injuries.
“The victim is currently receiving treatment at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH),” he added.
Following investigations, police arrested four local men aged between 17 and 25. All four suspects were found to have prior criminal records, although urine tests for all were also negative.
Alexson said remand applications for all 11 suspects have been approved by the Kuching Magistrate’s Court for four days to assist in ongoing investigations.
Both cases are being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means, which carries penalties of up to 10 years’ imprisonment, a fine, or whipping upon conviction.
The police urged the public not to take the law into their own hands, stressing that such actions could lead to further legal consequences. — DayakDaily
