KUCHING, Feb 20: A 17-year-old boy is feared drowned after he was reportedly swept away by strong river currents at Kampung Kolong Sungai Tengah near SK Tan Sri Datuk Haji Mohamed here this afternoon.
According to a report from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), an emergency call was received at 4.32pm regarding a victim feared drowned.
A team from the Petra Jaya Fire and Rescue Station (BBP Petra Jaya) was dispatched to the scene, located about 18 kilometres away, and arrived at 4.50pm.
The victim has been identified as Fahril Zaquan Hasbullah.
Based on information from the victim’s friend, the teenager was playing at the riverbank with a companion before he allegedly fell into the river and was carried away by strong currents.
Upon arrival, the operations commander, PBK II (TBK I) Asmadi Mohamad Nawei, confirmed that the victim was feared drowned. Firefighters immediately conducted a search along the riverbank in efforts to locate the teenager.
The operation involved nine personnel, assisted by one Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) and one Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle.
Police (PDRM) were also present at the scene.
As of press time, the victim had yet to be found. — DayakDaily
