KUCHING: The Sarawak government has agreed in principle to collaborate with the UEM Group to develop a large-scale 500-megawatt solar project in Baram.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced this during a courtesy visit by UEM Group, Planet QEOS, and Khazanah Nasional Berhad at Wisma Bapa Malaysia, Petra Jaya, yesterday (July 24).
UEM Group chairman Datuk Amran Hafiz Affifudin said a feasibility study will be conducted to assess the suitability of the project.
“This project concerns the development of a large-scale 500-megawatt solar project in the Baram district. We believe this project will be a ‘needle mover’ and overall very beneficial for all stakeholders in Sarawak and Malaysia in general.
“The Premier of Sarawak is highly supportive in principle; however, any project is subject to the feasibility study that we will be conducted.
“He suggested that we quickly return here to present the results of the study and expedite the matter,” he said when met by reporters.
Also present were Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, Sarawak Attorney-General Datuk Saferi Ali and Economic Planning Unit (EPU) Sarawak director Datuk Lester Matthew.
