KUCHING, Feb 2: A 61-year-old woman and her 15-year-old grandson were found dead following a fire that razed a workers’ quarters at Jalan Sungai Nyigu in Bintulu today.
In a report by the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), a call was received at 1.01am, and firefighters from the Bintulu station were deployed.
Upon arrival, it was noted that the fire had engulfed a two-storey block of non-permanent workers’ quarters comprising 31 units. The fire also destroyed three motorcycles and partially damaged another.
Firefighters deployed two 300-foot hose lines with two nozzles, sourcing water from the river and pumping it into the fire engine’s tank to extinguish the flames.
The charred remains of the victims, identified as Taun Nyaring (grandmother) and Melbourne Jeasy (grandson), were discovered at around 4.20am during overhaul works at the scene.
