KUCHING, Aug 31: A 70-year-old woman pedestrian was fatally struck by a car while crossing the road in the parking lot area of Aeroville Mall in Jalan Stutong at 6.23pm yesterday (Aug 30).
Kuching District Police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah confirmed that the accident occurred when a car exiting a junction collided with the elderly woman as she was crossing the carpark to get to a hypermarket.
“The victim sustained head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from the Kota Samarahan Heart Centre,” he said in a statement.
Mohd Farhan added that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
The section carries a penalty of up to 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of RM50,000 if convicted.
The police are appealing to members of the public and witnesses to come forward with any information related to the incident to assist in the ongoing investigation.
