KUCHING: The policies introduced by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg have driven progress in three key areas essential for regional development: economic prosperity, political stability and racial unity.
Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar said Sarawak has seen significant improvements in these three areas under Abang Johari’s leadership.
“For a state or region to thrive, its economy must soar, like a ‘skyrocketing budget’. When political stability and economic strength are secured, the people’s lives become more comfortable and prosperous,” he said.
He said this during the officiation ceremony of the 2024 Conference of Speakers of Parliament and State Legislative Assemblies held at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly here, today (Sept 13).
Asfia added that Sarawak’s ongoing policies focus on transitioning to a green economy, a move with the potential to elevate both the region and Malaysia on the global stage.
“Our Premier has introduced several innovative policies, including hydrogen energy, green and blue energy, carbon trading, carbon storage, algae-based oil, the establishment of Sarawak’s own airline, and new international trade ports in Southeast Asia.
“”Sarawak’s ambition to become Malaysia’s aerospace hub is part of a larger plan to enhance the region’s economy, prestige, and standing under the vision of ‘Maju Sarawak; Maju Malaysia’,” he said.
This year’s conference marks the first time Sarawak has hosted the event in 28 years, bringing together 15 Speakers from around Malaysia, 14 Deputy Speakers, a Chief Parliamentary Administrator, and 12 Secretaries from the Dewan Negara, Dewan Rakyat, and State Legislative Assemblies across Malaysia.
Earlier, three working papers were presented. Dewan Negara president Senator Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah addressed the topic titled ‘Persoalan: Adakah Dewan Negara Institusi Rubber Stamp? Kuasa Speaker: Satu Coretan’, while Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Datu Johari Abdul presented “Memperkukuhkan Demokrasi Berparlimen Melalui Penglibatan Awam Yang Progresif” and Asfia presented “Amendments to the Standing Orders.”
