Abang Johari reappointed Unimas pro-chancellor for 2026–2029 term

KUCHING (March 17): Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has been reappointed as pro-chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) for the term spanning March 15, 2026 to March 14, 2029.

According to a post on the Premier’s official Facebook page ‘Sarawakku’, the reappointment letter was presented during a courtesy call by the university’s top management, led by its board chairman Tan Sri Sulong Matjeraie and vice-chancellor Professor Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit.

The appointment was consented to by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, in his capacity as Chancellor of Unimas, upon the advice of the Minister of Higher Education.

During the same meeting, Unimas also introduced its newly established Faculty of Law, the university’s 11th faculty, with Professor Dato Dr Johan Shamsudin Sabaruddin appointed as its inaugural dean.

‘Sarawakku’ noted that this marks the fourth time the Premier has held the post of Unimas pro-chancellor since 2017, reflecting continued confidence in his leadership and commitment to advancing higher education in Sarawak.

Ahmad Hata also briefed the Premier on the university’s latest developments, including achievements in academic and research fields, as well as ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional growth.

Among those present were Unimas Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs and Alumni, Professor Ir. Ts. Dr Al-Khalid Othman; Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic and International; Professor Dr Fitri Suraya Mohamad Hapni Joblie; and Unimas Registrar, Azlan Ramli.
