SIBU (Aug 31): Sarawak’s strong focus on environmental sustainability with its advanced policies on green and new economy has impressed leaders attending the recent Asean Australia Business Forum 2024 in Australia, said Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“Two days ago, I was in Sydney, Australia, where I was given the honour to speak on the green and new economy in Sarawak.

“The feedback that I received is that leaders attending the Asean Australia Business Forum 2024 were impressed with Sarawak’s policies that are far ahead in the new economy.

“And they will come to Sarawak to see for themselves the policies on environmental sustainability and the use of green energy,” he said.

Abang Johari was speaking at the state-level National Day celebration at University of Technology Sarawak’s (UTS) Chancellor Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud’s Hall here today.

Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar symbolically officiated at the event.

Meanwhile, Abang Johari pointed out that Sarawak is a peaceful place, and its people are always striving to maintain unity despite differences in religion and ethnicity.

“Although we sometimes have differing opinions, we have never faced significant racial or religious issues that could lead to divisions in Sarawak’s diverse society,” he said.

He said Sarawak’s potential to become a high-income developed economy by 2030 is very bright, and therefore called on Sarawakians to continue working together to realise this dream.

“Division caused by racial and religious issues will undoubtedly hinder our existing efforts, which would be detrimental to us all,” he added.

About 1,500 people attended the National Day celebration today.

Among those present were Wan Junaidi’s wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, Abang Johari’s wife Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang, and Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan among others.
