SIBU (Oct 8): Arthur Chieng emerged champion in a carrom tournament organised by Saberkas Bukit Assek branch and Junior Chamber International (JCI) Seduan here on Sunday.

Placing second was Caleb Ting, while Ngu Koh Kit and Rainnie Lau claimed third and fourth, respectively.

A total of 16 participants took part in the competition, which took place at My Centre Sibu.

Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng, who is Saberkas Bukit Assek chairman, officiated the opening ceremony.

In his speech, he said carrom was a popular family entertainment activity back in the 1980s which then gained popularity among the youth.

“With technological advancements, online games have become more accessible and have replaced face-to-face games, indirectly leading to a decline in family interactions,” he said.

He lamented that when families get together nowadays, many – especially children – are glued to their mobile phones or other devices.

To boost interaction among family members, Joseph suggested a no-gadget rule during meals.

“At mealtimes, put down all phones and spend time talking to each other,” he said.

Also present at the competition were Saberkas Bukit Assek secretary Councillor Kiing Teck Ho, JCI Seduan president Vincent Wong, and organising chairman Ngu Koh Kit.
