PETALING JAYA:

Biodiesel, particularly the B20 blend, is safe for use and should not cause damage to vehicles, says economy minister Akmal Nasrullah Nasir.

He said engine specification standards supporting the use of the fuel have been in place since 2020, and that B20 biodiesel is already in use in several areas of the country.

“Any complaints or concerns have not reached a level at which they can be used as reference cases,” he said.

The motor industry and vehicle owners have had ample time since 2020 to prepare for the transition, he said in Port Klang when asked about the suitability of the blend for use in vehicles.

Akmal had previously said the government had agreed to raise the biodiesel blend from B10 to B15 in response to the global energy crisis. He said the shift would begin with a phased introduction of B12, which would not incur additional costs as it would utilise existing blending infrastructure.

A 10% blend of biodiesel has been set as the national standard for transport use, with a 20% blend for Labuan, Langkawi and Sarawak, except for Bintulu.
