KUCHING (Aug 2): The Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) is the first facility of its kind in Sarawak to implement the Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) swab-testing in adherence to the ISO 22000 Food Safety Management System standards.

The implementation, led by BCCK’s Quality Assurance Department, is meant as a new benchmark for hygiene-monitoring, underscoring the centre’s dedication to ensuring the highest levels of cleanliness and safety.

The ATP swab-testing has been integrated into BCCK’s cleaning and sanitation protocols, with the process involving specialised swabbing to collect samples from surfaces, which are then analysed with a portable luminometer to detect ATP, a molecule found in all living cells including bacteria, moulds and other microorganisms.

BCCK chief executive officer Eric van Piggelen remarked: “The health and safety of our guests and employees is our top priority. The introduction of ATP swab testing as part of our hygiene monitoring programme is a significant step towards maintaining the highest food safety standards in accordance with ISO 22000.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to excellence and innovation in food safety.”

Quality Assurance executive Nur Azziani Abdul Sallih added: “This initiative improves hygiene standards, demonstrates our dedication to innovation and excellence, and simplifies hygiene monitoring. The simplicity and speed of the portable luminometer also reduces labour costs by minimising the need for specialised personnel and extensive lab work.

“Frequent and rapid hygiene checks enable proactive contamination control, lowering the risk of costly contamination issues and product recalls.”
