BINTANGOR (Oct 14): The Bintangor Festival is to be renamed ‘Meradong Festival’ from this year onwards, Meradong assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing has announced.
The rebranding is meant to boost agrotourism activities in the region, according to him.
“This was mooted during a meeting with the Deputy Minister in Sarawak Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and Sarawak Public Communications Unit – Ukas) Datuk Abdullah Saidol.
“At the festival committee meeting, we unanimously supported the idea, and this year, the Meradong Festival will be taking place from Nov 23 to Dec 1.
“We aim for the Meradong Festival to boost agrotourism activities and at the same time, enhance the socio-economic status of the local communities,” said Ding after chairing the festival’s main committee coordination meeting here yesterday.
Ding expressed his hope that the festival could serve as a platform for the local community to showcase their agricultural and livestock products.
“In addition, we hope the festival could forge unity and improve the livelihoods of the people through entrepreneurial activities, sales, and promotion of local products,” he added.
Also present at the meeting were acting Meradong District officer Thomas Geoffrey Kendawang, and Meradong and Julau district councils’ secretary Lau Chi Sing.
