KUCHING, 6 Oct: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan ended International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak (IDECS) 2026 on a lighter note, joking that Sarawak’s growing venture into the space economy might one day take him there himself.
“I am very fortunate that I followed the last session of the day talking about space. I hope one day that will bring me to the space,” he said, drawing on discussions from the final session of the two-day conference.
His remark came after a day in which space featured prominently at the IDECS 2026, including discussions on satellites, the low-orbit economy and Sarawak’s efforts to develop local space capabilities.
The light moment was followed by a more serious message as Awang Tengah urged participants to turn the ideas and partnerships formed during IDECS into practical results.
“Our responsibility now is to translate these areas into practical outcomes that benefit our economy, businesses, and the people at large,” he said.
According to him, Sarawak wanted to develop technology locally, commercialise research and create opportunities for local talent in emerging industries.
Awang Tengah, who is also the Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment, called for stronger cooperation as Sarawak moves into areas including artificial intelligence, semiconductors, advanced manufacturing and the emerging space economy.
“We have to collaborate. We have to work together,” he said.
He later officially declared the ninth edition of IDECS concluded. – TVS
