BINTULU (Feb 25): The government has reiterated its commitment to improving access to quality education in rural areas through the implementation and handover of several school development and reconstruction projects across the division.

The handover ceremony was held at SK Kuala Annau in Tatau on Feb 22 and was officiated by Sarawak Education director Omar Mahli as guest of honour.

The projects included the construction of a full replacement building at SK Hermanus Assan in Sebauh, as well as the redevelopment of several dilapidated schools—SK Kuala Annau, SK Rumah Keseng, SK Sungai Segian Labang and SK Ulu Kakus.

Funded under special government allocations to strengthen rural education infrastructure, the developments feature new classroom blocks, boys’ and girls’ hostels, dining halls, administrative offices, teachers’ quarters and other supporting facilities to provide a safer and more conducive learning environment.

“The upgrading of school infrastructure, particularly in remote and interior areas, remains a key agenda to ensure quality education for all, regardless of geographical location,” Omar said.

He noted that the initiatives are aligned with the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2026-2035, which focuses on expanding equitable access to education, reducing urban-rural disparities, enhancing student well-being and fostering a more inclusive 21st-century learning environment.

Omar added that the provision of complete and modern facilities not only enhances student comfort, but also strengthens education delivery and contributes to sustained human capital development for the state and nation.

He said the handover ceremony reflects the ongoing commitment of the government, the Ministry of Education, the Sarawak State Education Department and implementing agencies to ensure every student receives fair, safe and quality educational opportunities in line with the national education transformation agenda.
