Diversity no barrier to progress

KUCHING: Sarawak has demonstrated that racial, religious and cultural diversity need not be a barrier to progress, says Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

He said Sarawak has emerged as one of Malaysia’s best examples of managing religious diversity inclusively, including through the establishment of the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR).

Wan Junaidi said UNIFOR, under the Sarawak Premier’s Department, is a unique institution dedicated specifically to safeguarding the welfare of non-Muslim communities.

He noted that RM685 million has been provided through UNIFOR since its establishment in 2017 to support the construction, repair and maintenance of houses of worship and mission schools.

“This approach demonstrates that the government respects the right of every citizen to practise their respective faiths in a conducive environment,” he said in his Malaysia Day 2026 message.

Wan Junaidi also called on Malaysians to continue nurturing a culture of excellence across all fields.

Whether in education, research, sports, the arts or public service, he said, Malaysians should continuously strive to achieve the highest standards internationally.

He said Malaysia Day is also a reminder that success does not come easily, but requires patience, wisdom, unity and sacrifice.

He therefore urged Malaysians to continue working together in facing challenges with determination.

“I am confident that with strong unity, good governance and a knowledgeable population, Malaysia will continue to emerge as a respected and competitive nation capable of setting an example for the global community,” he added.

The Head of State said Malaysia Day should not merely be an annual celebration but a point for renewed determination to build a country that is fairer, more progressive and more humane.

He expressed hope that Malaysia would continue to enjoy peace, prosperity and blessings, while Sarawak remained an example of a progressive, harmonious and respected state.

“To all Malaysians, particularly Sarawakians, let us continue to preserve the spirit of mutual trust, mutual respect and uplifting one another.

“This is the spirit that will ensure our country remains strong in facing whatever challenges may come in the future,” he said.
