Election Commission refutes report of proposed increase in Sarawak parliamentary seats

KUCHING, Sept 25: There is currently no proposal to increase the number of parliamentary constituencies in Sarawak, the Election Commission of Malaysia (EC) said today, refuting a newspaper report claiming that such a proposal had been prepared as part of a redelineation exercise.

EC secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus said the report was based on an alleged “Proposal Document on the Redelineation of Electoral Constituencies in Sarawak” purportedly shared with the newspaper, which claimed that the number of parliamentary constituencies in Sarawak would be increased to a certain number.

“The EC wishes to emphasise that there is currently no proposal to increase the number of parliamentary constituencies in Sarawak involving any electoral constituencies as alleged by the newspaper, which referred to discussions on the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63),” he said in a statement.

Khairul said the only recommendations currently prepared by the EC were those under the Seventh Sarawak State Electoral Constituency Review (KSP).

“The recommendations were officially being displayed for public inspection from Sept 1 to 30, 2026, as part of the ongoing review process,” he added.

The EC also urged the newspaper concerned and other parties to refer to authentic and accurate information on the Electoral Constituency Review through its official portal or official statements issued by the commission.

The clarification comes amid ongoing attention on the redelineation of electoral constituencies in Sarawak and discussions surrounding the implementation of provisions under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). — DayakDaily
