KUCHING (March 8): The proposal to add 17 new seats to the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) is expected to be tabled in July’s parliamentary session, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof.

According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), he said discussions on the matter are still ongoing at the federal government level before the proposal is presented for parliamentary consideration.

“Currently, we are only discussing this at the federal level, and our aim is for the proposal to increase Sarawak’s DUN seats to be tabled at the July parliamentary session,” he said after attending the NEXGEN P194 Petra Jaya 2026 Joint Iftar at Masjid Al-Ghazali here on Sunday.

The Petra Jaya MP added that any further developments regarding the proposal will only be known after it is tabled and approved by Parliament.

On July 7 last year, the Sarawak DUN passed the State Legislative Assembly (Membership Composition) Bill 2025, which approved the addition of 17 new seats.

This will bring the total number of Sarawak’s DUN seats to 99 from the current 82.

During the same event, Fadillah also presented duit raya contributions to tahfiz (Quranic school) students from Madrasah Darul Uloom Islamiyyah Rampangi, Madrasah Darul Uloom Al-Fatah, and Madrasah Tahfiz Al-Qurah Bidayatul Muthadin.

The contributions were also extended to residents of the Toh Puan Hajah Norkiah Children’s Home.
