Fed govt approves RM131 million for rural road projects

SIBU: A road connecting Kut Muara, Sg. Pinang and Bungan Besar has been approved under the 12th Malaysia Plan for Rolling Plan 4 this year with a total value of RM131 million.

Senator Robert Lau Hui Yew was briefed by Matu District Office and the State Public Works Department (PWD) with regards to the Sarawak Region Rural Road Project Implementation.

The project is to construct road with a length of 15km, including a 50 metres concrete bridge that will link Kut Muara, Sg Pinang and Bungan Besar.

The briefing was held at PWD Sibu Division office at Wisma Sanyan here yesterday (Oct 15).

According to Lau, the project has received approval and funds from the federal government.

He said the implementation agency is now carrying out preparation works and the project is estimated to commence in the first quarter of Year 2026, and would take three years to complete.

He was glad that the project was now in the pipeline to be implemented as the Bawang Assan community staying in Sg. Pinang and Bungan Besar have longed for better road connectivity for years.

“This road will eventually link up to Rantau Panjang in Sibu when another two sections of road will be built. These two sections will be 30km long. One of these two sections will be the Phase II of the Rantai Panjang-Rassau Road funded by Sarawak Government covering a distance of 23km. Phase 1 of this section has been completed and covered a distance of 6.8km.

Also present at the briefing was Matu District Office assistant administrative officer, Noorkasmawati Kassim, PWD’s representative, Faizol Hassim, Cr Kevin Lau Kor Jie, Cr Christopher Kelebit, Kapitan Wong Hua and Penghulu William Kanyan.
