SIBU (Feb 3): More culturally distinctive activities should be organised to attract more visitors to Sibu, said Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Dato Sri Tiong King Sing.
He said by doing so, more people can gain a deeper appreciation of Sibu—a town rich in cultural heritage—and its unique culture and charm.
“These activities not only attract tourists, but also encourage local residents to come out and participate, thus strengthening community bonds. This in turn makes life warmer and more vibrant for everyone,” he said at the Mixed Veteran Mandarin Chinese New Year Songs Singing Competition held here last weekend.
His speech was delivered by political secretary to the Premier Joshua Ting.
The competition saw 36 veteran singers take the stage, and was organised by the Swan City Recreation Club Sibu (SCRCS). The event also marked SCRCS’ eighth anniversary celebration.
Tiong said the event had a positive impact on the community and served as an important platform for participants to build their confidence, develop self-assurance, and gain valuable stage experience.
“Through practice and performance, participants learn how to express themselves, overcome stage fright, and grow through applause and encouragement.
“Music also enhances the festive spirit, making celebrations more vibrant and heartwarming. It allows us to share joy and convey blessings through song, especially during the Lunar New Year season,” he said.
