MIRI: The meaning of independence must be imbued in children from a young age.

Deputy Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Development, Datuk Rosey Yunus said it is important to nurture patriotism from an early age, drawing comparisons to the patriotic spirit seen in countries like Japan and Indonesia.

She said today’s children are the ones who will continue the legacy and struggles of past leaders, ensuring the continuity of Malaysia’s progress and development.

“Our role is to continue the struggle of previous leaders, and I am confident that all children are our future leaders who will carry on this struggle,” she said.

Rosey shared these sentiments on Wednesday after receiving the convoy of the ‘Kembara Jalur Gemilang’ programme at SMK Agama Miri.

The convoy, consisting of five vehicles, was scheduled to proceed to Tatau, Bintulu, in the afternoon, with their final destination being Sibu.

This year, Sibu has been chosen to host the Sarawak-level National Day celebration, themed ‘Jiwa Merdeka,’ which will take place on Aug 30-31.

The event is expected to see the attendance of the Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, as well as Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang.

Rosey  encouraged the public to participate in the ‘Satu Rumah Satu Bendera’ programme by decorating their homes with flags, symbolising the sovereignty and pride of the nation.

“Our flag is a symbol of our sovereignty. We hope that by participating in this programme, we can instill a strong spirit of patriotism and love for Malaysia and Sarawak among the people,” she said.

Rosey stressed the importance of nurturing patriotism from an early age, drawing comparisons to the patriotic spirit seen in countries like Japan and Indonesia.
