KUCHING, Jan 28: The Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) will activate the Taman Dahlia traffic lights and open two traffic lanes along Jalan Matang from Jan 28 as part of immediate measures to improve traffic flow amid ongoing road construction and upgrading works.

In a Facebook post yesterday (Jan 27), JKR Sarawak said the Taman Dahlia traffic lights will begin operations on Jan 28, with two lanes opened to traffic from Matang towards the Kopodims Traffic Light Junction, covering chainage CH 0+000 to CH 1+900.

It added that the Kopodims Traffic Light Junction is expected to be completed and operational within two weeks.

JKR Sarawak said Traffic Control Officers will be stationed daily from 6am to 7pm, particularly during peak hours, to help regulate traffic and ensure smoother flow.

In a separate Facebook post, JKR Sarawak said its director, Datu Dr Cassidy Morris, paid a surprise visit to the Jalan Matang project site to assess construction progress and on-site traffic management.

According to JKR Sarawak, the visit aimed to ensure traffic flow remains a priority for the comfort and safety of road users, while also confirming that project implementation is proceeding as planned.

“As part of JKR Sarawak’s commitment to Jalan Matang, traffic management improvements are being implemented, including the operation of new traffic lights, the opening of two traffic lanes, and the deployment of Traffic Control Officers to ease vehicle movement, particularly during peak hours,” it said.

Cassidy also stressed that road user safety must not be compromised despite ongoing construction works, and instructed all relevant parties to strictly comply with the approved traffic management plan.

“At the same time, Cassidy advised road users to remain patient and continue to give their cooperation throughout the implementation period to ensure the project can be completed smoothly and to a high standard,” it said.

JKR Sarawak reaffirmed its commitment to implementing every project responsibly, with a strong focus on public wellbeing, in line with its “We Build For You” ethos. — DayakDaily
