SIBU, Oct 7: The upgrading of Jalan Oya into a dual carriageway will finally be completed by December 5 this year.
“The first phase, spanning 1.44 kilometres (km), is under construction. The project is on track for completion by December 5, and we expect the contractor to finish on time,” said Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Sarawak, Datuk Aidel Lariwoo.
Speaking to reporters at a site visit today, Aidel said the tender for the next phase to add another 1km to the road may be opened soon under the supervision of the Public Works Department (JKR).
“Phase 1 is nearing completion, and Phase 2 will follow shortly. We will also be installing three smart traffic lights in this area to improve traffic flow,” he added.
Aidel also said that despite challenges in relocating utility infrastructure, all necessary work had been completed without displacing residents.
“The relocation process previously took longer due to policy, land surveys, and urban management issues, but these have now been resolved,” he added.
The project was initially scheduled for completion in November 2023.
Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng was optimistic that the new dual carriageway would help ease traffic congestion in Sibu.
“This is Phase 1, which covers the busiest section of Jalan Oya. We hope the opening of this dual carriageway will help alleviate the traffic jams,” he said.
Chieng also shared that the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) would start installing traffic lights today. — DayakDaily
