KUCHING (Oct 3): The annual Japanese Film Festival (JFF) 2024 is set to take place at CityONE Megamall’s Golden Screen Cinema (GSC) here, from Oct 10 to 13.
According to a press release, this year’s JFF will showcase a diverse lineup of over 13 films, spanning genres like drama, sci-fi, romance, thriller and animation.
It said that the festival will kick-off with ‘Godzilla Minus One (2023)’, which won the Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards.
This film, directed by Yamazaki Takashi, offers a fresh take on the Godzilla franchise and will make its premiere in Malaysia theatres.
Besides showcasing iconic movies such as ‘Akira (1988)’ by Otomo Katsuhiro and ‘Sand Land (2023)’ by the late Toriyama Akira, the festival will feature new releases such as ‘Matched (2024)’ and ‘All the Long Nights (2024)’ by Miyake Sho, as well as ‘A Samurai in Time (2024)’, each offering unique perspectives on contemporary Japanese life and culture.
Additionally, festival-goers will have the opportunity to collect stamps throughout the event to redeem exclusive goodies and prizes.
Tickets for JFF 2024 are priced affordably at RM10, except ‘A Samurai in Time’, which will be sold at the prevailing ticket price.
Tickets for the screenings can be purchased one week before the first screening via GSC CityONE Megamall Ticketing Kiosk, GSC e-payment at gsc.com.my, or GSC Mobile Apps.
There will also be a special IMAX screening for ‘Godzilla Minus One’, with tickets priced at RM50.
All films will be presented in Japanese with English subtitles.
Over the past 20 years, JFF has attracted over 200,000 festival-goers, presented 215 films and 127 directors, as well as hosted 11 fringe events across 11 venues in five states.
Last year, the festival had 9,498 attendees as it dramatically recovered from the Covid-19 pandemic.
