KUCHING, Oct 15: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap has given assurance that he will submit his application to the Sarawak Premier’s office to utilise his Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) funds to repair the 1-metre-deep sinkhole which recently appeared near SK Satria Jaya.

According to a press release, Yap, together with officers from the Public Works Department (JKR), visited the school yesterday (Oct 14) to evaluate the extent of the damage caused.

“The visit was arranged after the initial visit by YB Wilfred Yap to the school on October 4 on being informed by the PIBG (Parent-Teacher Association) of the school to investigate the sinkhole thoroughly and to inspect if other parts of the school may be vulnerable to similar problems,” said the statement.

During the visit, Yap requested JKR to propose the scope of work to rectify the problem and the total cost required to rectify and fix the sinkhole problem.

The preliminary estimation by JKR for resolving the sinkhole problem is approximately RM150,000.

“While waiting for the full costing and report from JKR, the affected area has been cordoned off by the Fire Department to ensure the safety of students and staff.”

It also added that Yap hoped the Education Department’s bureaucratic red tape will not slow down the implementation of the project, as the sinkhole problem must be rectified as soon as possible for the safety and well-being of everyone at SK Satria Jaya.

On his part, Yap will continue to prioritise the use of his Minor Rural Project (MRP) and RTP funds in his constituency to improve infrastructure and ensure a conducive environment for students to learn and teachers to do their jobs effectively. — DayakDaily
