KUCHING (Aug 31): Cries of ‘Merdeka’ filled the air at Kampung Sungai Tapang today as parents and teachers joined the preschoolers of Kemas kindergarten in a vibrant National Day celebration.
The event, which commemorated the nation’s hard-won freedom and independence, was made even more festive with a lively parade around the village, where participants of all ages proudly waved the Jalur Gemilang and Ibu Pertiwi flags.
Participants also sang the national anthem ‘Negaraku’, and the patriotic song ‘Jalur Gemilang’, expressing their deep love for the country.
The celebration featured not only the parade but also an art and craft competition and various performances, adding to the day’s joyous atmosphere.
Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap was among those who joined the celebration.
In his address, Yap emphasised that the celebration serves as a reminder to the younger generation to appreciate the struggles and sacrifices of the nation’s forefathers in gaining independence and to instill in them the spirit of independence.
“On this Malaysia National Day 2024, let us respond and celebrate the spirit of ‘Malaysia Madani: Jiwa Merdeka’ that resonates throughout the country where we commit ourselves to education and innovation as the catalyst for generating a better future for all.
“Together, let us continue the struggle, foster national spirit, and unite for the progress and glory of our beloved country,” he said.
