KUCHING (March 9): The Kuching Hokkien Association organised a Ramadan bubur pedas distribution programme at Kampung Muara Tebas on Sunday.
Association president Dato Sri Richard Wee led committee members to distribute bubur pedas to the local community in the village, which is known as one of Sarawak’s tourism attractions and a symbol of ethnic harmony.
Wee pointed out that the Qing Shan Yan Temple, which comes under the association, has maintained close ties with the village community for nearly 200 years.
He said the relationship between the association and Kampung Muara Tebas residents is akin to that of a family, with both sides supporting each other during festivals, football matches, Malay martial arts activities, Wesak Day, and the birthday celebration of the sea goddess Mazu.
He noted that several Chinese families also reside in the area and are involved in seafood and marine produce businesses.
Wee, who is also Sarawak Federation of Chinese Associations president, said maintaining peace and harmony must begin with individuals themselves, like the approach taken by the Sarawak leadership, which emphasises unity among the people in its administration.
He also expressed appreciation that Sarawakians are led by capable and principled leaders who do not mislead the public on important issues, adding that visionary leadership and sound strategies have driven development while preventing the people from being influenced by excessive or harmful rhetoric.
Wee voiced hope that upcoming matters related to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) would receive full support from Sarawakians and achieve success.
“This concerns the present and the future of Sarawak. Resources that rightfully belong to us must be returned to us without compromise,” he added.
Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Sarawak and Demak Laut assemblyman Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni officiated at the event.
