KUCHING: The Kuching International Busking Festival (KIBF) 2024 begins today, bringing the city’s streets alive with diverse performances.
The three-day event from Aug 29 to 31features over 40 acts from across the performing arts spectrum, including music, dance, Chinese opera, and public speaking.
“The festival takes place across iconic locations such as Carpenter Street, the Kuching Waterfront, India Street, and Plaza Merdeka, making Kuching a dynamic stage for artistic expression.
“Participants will compete for top prizes, including RM5,000 for the first-place winner, with special awards such as the Plaza Merdeka People’s Choice Award and the Continental Cycles Emerging Artist Award also up for grabs,” the organisers said in a press release.
New this year is the Speakers’ Corner, offering a platform for open discussions and community engagement.
Esteemed judges, including Zaid Zaini, executive producer of Front Row Asia, and Ivy Chua, director of La Danse Company, will evaluate the performances.
“KIBF 2024 is more than just a festival — it’s a celebration of Kuching’s rich cultural heritage and vibrant community spirit.
“With the involvement of local schools like St. Thomas, St. Mary’s, Saint Teresa, SMK Batu Lintang, and Matang Vocational College, the festival showcases the incredible talent of young performers while also offering a platform for seasoned artists,” the organisers added.
