KUCHING: Sarawak lawn bowlers bolstered the contingent’s medal tally by earning a silver in the men’s pair and a bronze in the women’s singles.
The Federal Territories men’s team dominated the competition, claiming gold in both the men’s pair and men’s team trio events.
In the men’s pair, Faris Syuhairil Ahmad Syukri-Muhammad Afiq Azman narrowly defeated Sarawak’s Mohammad Aryan Nazrullah Nazaruddin-Muhammad Ramadhan Mohamad Jeffy 11-10.
The bronze medal went to Johor, who overcame Terengganu 15-8.
In the men’s team trio category, the Federal Territories’ Abdul Hannan Hasan, Aiman Naqiuddin Zulkiflie, Mohamad Hafiz Roslan, and Muhammad Amirul Naim Fazly, secured the gold by defeating Terengganu 15-9.
Johor once again claimed the bronze, edging out Selangor 11-10.
In the women’s singles, Nur Ain Kemilia Sukri from Terengganu clinched the gold, defeating her competitor Nur Najla Mustakim 20-11.
Sarawak’s Dayang Nur Alia Sharmiela Abang Gadisa earned the bronze by narrowly beating Selangor’s Nur Syafira Mohamad Rezuan 19-18.
The women’s team fours category was won by Selangor, who triumphed over Pahang 15-13. Sabah secured the bronze medal, defeating Kedah 10-7.
Sarawak head coach Nur Fithri Yaani Hamdin expressed her pleasant surprise at the bronze medal, particularly given Dayang Nur Alia’s relatively short training tenure.
“She has only been training for a little over two years, and to secure a bronze medal at this stage is truly remarkable. I believe she can achieve even more in the future,” she told reporters after the medal presentation at Sarawak Lawn Bowls Arena here today (Aug 16).
She added that Sarawak will regroup and come back stronger for the upcoming matches across all five events, which will commence tomorrow (Aug 17).
