SIBU (July 24): A logging company will rebuild the collapsed log bridge across a river at Nanga Antaroh in Baleh, near Kapit, said Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

He said the logging company is the owner of the private road affected by the collapsed log bridge, and is still using the road.

“I was told that the Kapit Resident and district offices, and other (government) agencies, have also visited and monitored the situation there.

“And I was made to understand that indeed the logging company still using that access, will rebuild the bridge,” he said in a statement.

Nanta said if the logging company is not able to rebuild the bridge on time, his ministry together with the Kapit Resident and district officer would come up with an alternative to assist those affected.

“It (logging road) was built a long time ago and has been used for many years.

“As the bridge also connects to many Iban longhouses, the access is also utilised by these folk,” he said.

The log bridge reportedly collapsed early Tuesday, cutting off connection between Nanga Antaroh to Ulu Ga’at.

According to a source, the bridge over Nanga Antaroh, with logs holding the entire structure together, underwent repair works in 2022.

“The log bridge was constructed by a logging company in the early 1970s as means to transport logs from the deep interiors of Ulu Ga’at to Kapit and other areas,” said the source.

Those affected, according to the source, were pupils of SK Nanga Antaroh and SK Nanga Balang use it to go to school, residents Rumah Jugah, Rumah Belikau, Rumah Johny and those in the Stapang area.
